くらいつく【食らい付く】

1 〔かみつく〕 bite (into) sth; sink one's teeth into sth; take a bite of; chomp.

●空腹だったから, ハンバーガーが出されるや否やがぶりと食らいついた. I was so hungry that scarcely was the burger set down in front of me than I sank my teeth into it.

2 〔食いついて離れない〕 fasten one's teeth into sth (and refuse to let go); take hold of…; lock onto…; cling (for dear life).

●寺尾は横綱の腰に食らいついた. Terao grabbed the yokozuna about the hips and clung for dear life [like a bulldog].

・もうけ話に一度食らいついたら決して離さない男だ. Once he gets his teeth into a moneymaking scheme, he never lets go.
